A large audience turned out at a public meeting at Cerrigydrudion yesterday (Thursday 28/08/08) to show their concern over Government plans to close the village’s post office.
The meeting, chaired by Clwyd West MP, David Jones, attracted about 200 local residents.
Representatives from Post Office Limited and Postwatch were also present, as were Clwyd West Welsh Assembly Member, Darren Millar, and North Wales Regional Member, Mark Isherwood.
The meeting was sometimes heated, with residents questioning the decision to close the principal post office in the Hiraethog area.
Speaking after the meeting, David Jones MP said:
“This is the largest post office closure meeting to be held so far in Clwyd West, and probably the most passionate.
“Both Cerrigydrudion and Pentrefoelas post offices are to be closed and replaced with an intermittent, downgraded service. This will mean that there will be no permanent post office service along the stretch of the A5 road between Betws y Coed and Corwen.
“Cerrigydrudion post office serves a large rural area and it makes no sense at all to close it.
“I believe that the residents of Cerrig have an excellent case for a reprieve from the closure decision and I urge as many people as possible to write to Post Office Limited opposing the plan.”
