 | RUTHIN PARKING CHARGES COULD PROVE THE LAST STRAW |
 |
Westminster, 29 January, 2009
Clwyd West Member of Parliament, David Jones, has criticised the decision by Denbighshire County Council to increase car parking charges.
Whilst the parking rate for thirty minutes has been reduced from 20p to 10p, other parking charges have been drastically increased, by up to 150 per cent.
David Jones said:
“I speak regularly to businesspeople in Ruthin, who tell me that the cost of parking is doing significant damage to their businesses.
“We are now in the worst economic downturn since the end of World War II. At such a time, the council should be doing as much as it possibly can to help businesses survive, but constituents are telling me that they feel that the new parking charges could be the straw that breaks the camel’s back. Some shops could go out of business as a consequence.
“Other local authorities are showing much more sensitivity to the concerns of retailers. Wrexham Council, for example, is planning to halve parking charges.
“I strongly urge Denbighshire County Council to consider the effect that this hike in parking charges will have upon businesspeople in Ruthin. They must think again.”
